“In my own artistic work, I have studied my face through self-portraiture. Sometimes my vanity gets in the way, but I actually understand my face as a canvas or sculpture. That makes it easier for me to stand in front of another artist’s camera and let go of reductive notions of beauty. Then it’s more about the photo, the work – it should be interesting, touching or mesmerizing, or even ugly in the sense of unexpected. Beautiful is then actually meaningless as a category.”
